Images prioritized in the opening sequence are mainly the bottom of the ocean with statues, and the girl being pushed in the water with her clothes on.

The images carry an extremely dark and eerie vibe. To the audience, it displays a mystery of the main focus. Without the main character being shown, it is obvious that there is something coming. The music adds to the obscure and shady plot.

The genre (Horror) is reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset because in the opening film, it begins with a cut from light reflecting off water then fading into the horrors of under the sea. It shows the dark aspects of the ocean and makes it look more frightening. The music also adds a sense of terror as it makes for a thrilling opening. 

5. How does the film establish an enigma [mystery] from the outset?

The film establishes an enigma by the music, the dark setting, the slow transitions and the slow movement of the focus. When the girl is pushed into the water, you can tell that it was against her will as her face and school books sink in.
